Single-part MONOTHERM® pistons for maximum power
In view of constantly increasing mechanical loads, which could reach 250 bar and more in the future, the single-part MONOTHERM® piston made from forged steel represents a logical further development of the FERROTHERM® piston. In addition to the very high structural stability, the advantages of the MONOTHERM® piston also lie in the reduction of individual parts and simplification of the assembly.

Further concepts towards the ideal piston
In the standard form, the MONOTHERM® piston with closed skirt reveals a fully phosphate-coated profiled pin bore instead of bushings. The cooling channel is sealed by a twopiece cover plate on the base. The optimized form of the MONOTHERM® piston with closed skirt including the shorter pin allows for a comparable weight as with an aluminum diesel piston. An objective which nobody would have considered possible when the new development was in its infancy.

Since the start of series production in 2000, MAHLE has produced more than five million MONOTHERM® pistons. In 2007, the company expected to increase production by 2.2 million. This underscores the tremendous worldwide success of this piston concept. The MONOTHERM® piston will remain the reference for steel pistons also in the next decade.
