Cylinder liners

As with every part of an engine subject to high mechanical loads, the cylinder liners also have to withstand higher ignition pressures and higher speeds. MAHLE provides a product range which offers the class-leading technology. This is complemented by a sophisticated development competence for individual solutions.

The MAHLE cylinder liner program
A feature of the MAHLE product range for cylinder liners is its diversity. The right product is available for each engine in a diameter range from 60 to 450 mm - whether as a finished or semi-finished product, whether made of aluminum, cast iron or steel, whether with a coating or without. The most diverse materials are used to achieve this, depending on the strength and wear resistance required. In order to reduce weight in passenger car engines, MAHLE developed the aluminum rough cast liner and recently the compound aluminum rough cast liner (ALBOND®) which enables even closer cylinder distances.

Customized material use
The use of newly developed cast iron materials enables the production of very thin-walled cylinder liners, adapted to the pressure courses in the engine. The right choice of material also plays an important role for the increasing loads through higher ignition pressures and the increased risk of cavitation.

Better adaptation – better interaction
In order to reduce oil consumption and wear, MAHLE has optimized the interaction of liner material and piston ring coating. This results in an optimum combination.

New production processes
New honing processes which result in finer surfaces help reduce the oil consumption of engines. At the same time, the cylinder liners achieve a greater wear resistance.
